Senior Pump Maintenance Engineer
JOB DIMENSIONS
- Plays a key role in defining and optimizing fieldwide pump maintenance strategy, spare parts philosophy, and stock policy for a population exceeding 200 pumps.
- Responsible for scoping, planning, and execution of overhauls for production- and safety-critical pumps, managing an OPEX budget in the range of USD 7–10 million annually.
- Acts as a technical authority in pump and system performance analysis, identifying issues affecting reliability, availability, and efficiency, and leading continuous improvement initiatives.
- Leads and coordinates preparation, execution, repair, and troubleshooting activities, interfacing daily with a wide and diverse group of stakeholders, aligned with short-, medium-, and long-term planning horizons (2 years / 4 months / 5 weeks).
- Develops operational and capital budget inputs for annual and long-term company planning, covering maintenance activities and capital spare parts strategies.
- Leads and supervises specialist contractor activities, including onshore repairs and offshore interventions.
- Accountable for contractor management, performance monitoring, and quality assurance related to pump maintenance and repair services.
- Maintains regular interaction with Offshore/Site Leadership, Onshore organizations, and external vendors/OEMs.
CONTEXT AND ENVIRONMENT
- Position is in a Joint Venture Operating Company on the Al Shaheen Oil & Gas Field, one of the largest Offshore Oil & Gas Fields in the world. The role is onshore based in Doha, Qatar and is a permanent staff position on a residential basis (5 day working week).
ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Within the framework of maintaining required operational availability, oversee the safe development, implementation, and execution of Planned Preventive Maintenance (PPM) programs for pumps across all assets.
- Accountable for the planning, preparation, and execution of Corrective Maintenance (CM) activities for pumps fieldwide, in close coordination with Departmental Planners, Contracts & Procurement, Warehouse, Campaign/Shutdown Teams, Field Operations, Inspection, Maintenance disciplines, Offshore stakeholders, NOC Operations Centre Manager, and T1/T2 Maintenance Coordinators.
ACTIVITIES
- Drive an Incident-Free (IF) environment by establishing, promoting, and maintaining a strong safety culture.
- Ensure positive HSE performance of personnel, contractors, and all parties operating under the scope of responsibility. Conduct Contractor Service Quality Meetings on site when applicable.
- Ensure full compliance with HSE legislation, company standards, and procedures within the area of responsibility, promoting personnel safety, regulatory adherence, and environmental stewardship.
- Provide specialist technical advice and guidance to Site/Offshore personnel on pump and rotating equipment maintenance, including troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and technical investigations, in coordination with relevant maintenance teams.
- Provide technical and administrative support to Base Operations personnel; define scopes of work for pump overhaul and repair, maintain daily communication with NOC-OC T1/T2, and support resolution of technical and administrative issues as required.
- Establish and maintain effective maintenance strategies for pumps, including vendor coordination, and provide direct support to site requirements (vendors, spare parts, tooling, technical procedures, work packs, and Work Order resourcing).
- Prepare work packs and Work Orders for Campaign and Shutdown teams to ensure readiness and proper execution of scopes in line with Campaign/Shutdown gate criteria and resource planning requirements.
- Manage repair processes for critical rotating equipment and pumps, including site visits to vendor workshops and warehouses. Ensure procedures, quality control, and execution are performed to the required standards by contractors.
- Monitor the effectiveness of maintenance strategies related to the inspection, maintenance, and operation of pumps and rotating equipment. Identify opportunities to enhance efficiency, improve reliability, and reduce operating costs.
- Participate, as required, in vendor and contract audits.
- Execute Class 2 modifications (vendor-based modifications) in line with company processes and standards.
- Lead the management of repairs, overhauls, and maintenance of all pumps. Act as Contract Representative, with responsibility for cost control and performance of key third-party operational support services.
- Issue and update permutation/test schedules to ensure failure risks related to running hours are effectively staggered, maintaining availability of standby equipment. Ensure appropriate performance monitoring is in place to detect weaknesses.
- Ensure all certificates for installed pump equipment generated during overhaul are properly stored in shared folders, SAP Work Orders, and MANASA (where applicable).
- Ensure all certificates for spare parts planned for offshore use are verified and recorded in the system (via logistics) prior to shipment, as required.
- Support the development of Qatari personnel, including coaching in line with individual development plans.
- Act as Tier 2 Mechanical/Rotating Maintenance Engineer on an interim basis when required.
- Promote the sharing and adoption of best practices across the organization, supporting alignment and consistency between assets where practicable.
- Participate in Crisis Response Training and provide support during Emergency Response situations when required.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent from a recognized institution.
Experience
- Minimum 10 years of relevant experience in the oil and gas industry, with significant exposure to rotating equipment and pump systems in a similar senior role.
- Demonstrated strong technical expertise in a multi-cultural, highly specialized, and operationally demanding environment.
- Thorough understanding and practical application of process safety principles, industry standards, and company HSE procedures.
- Extensive knowledge of centrifugal and positive displacement pumps, including maintenance practices, troubleshooting, and lifecycle management.
- Solid experience with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) and maintenance planning/execution processes.
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams, and to engage confidently with peers, stakeholders, and senior management.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, particularly in high-pressure operational environments.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to produce technical reports and deliver clear recommendations.
- Relevant industry-recognized certifications and professional training in rotating equipment, reliability engineering, or maintenance practices are considered an advantage.
- Fluent in English (spoken and written), including strong command of technical terminology.
