Job Purpose

The Legal Counsel focuses all talent and energy on the Company to make sure that all its activities adhere to law and  the relevant agreements by giving legal advice and monitoring  all applicable legal aspects

Key Accountabilities

  1. Provides legal advice and support, prepares and reviews contracts, assurance on governance, risk, and compliance  frameworks and assists with dispute resolution and  compliance matters to safeguard the Company’s legal  position and ensure adherence to regulations, policies, the JVA and license to operate agreements.
  2. Provides legal support across various functions within  the Company, including field operations, drilling, major  projects, marine, insurance, finance.
  3. Provides definitive legal advice/opinion/interpretation required in the preparation and negotiations of various  oil and gas services contracts (e.g. Drilling Services  Contracts, Well Services Contracts, Aircraft Contracts,  Marine Services Agreement (including Charterparties),  Master Services Agreements and construction-related  type of contracts (e.g. FEED Contracts, EPCIC Contracts, Construction Major Contracts, General  Services Contract, Professional or Consultancy  Services) IT, insurance policies, Technology  Agreements, Guarantee Agreements and Special Tender Agreements etc.). 
  4. Drafting and amending the Company’s suite of  template contracts together with the Contracts &  Procurement department and external counsel, where  necessary.
  5. Supports on the formulation and recommendation of  policies, objectives and strategies relating to the Legal  & Governance Division.
  6. Supervises, manages and instructs outside  counsel/Law Firms on specialized matters including financing matters, so as to achieve optimal utilization of  external counsel. 
  7. Act as Legal focal point for industry-wide arrangements for mutual aid, cost sharing and joint operations with  shareholders and external stakeholders in Qatar. 
  8. Provides advice to the Company's top management  when required.

    Regularly identifies prospective legal risks and formulates strategies to achieve business objectives at appropriate risk, acting as a trusted advisor to clients  up to senior executive level.

  • Autonomy & Guidance
    Provides legal advice in own legal area of responsibility highly independently and provides guidance to  colleagues and support staff.
  • External Legal Partnership
    Assists in the engagement of outside counsel from the preferred list independently, participates in setting case strategy and direction, and monitors activities  performed by outside counsel.
  • Legal Document Management
    Plays a significant role in material files, providing strategic input and often serving as lead advisor or key decision-maker.
  • Stakeholder Management
    Provides input into internal legal strategy, assists in the coordination of external stakeholders, and actively  manages key client relationships, providing strategic  legal advisory.
  • File & Record Keeping
    Maintains oversight of significant legal documentation and records, ensuring compliance with internal and  external requirements.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in law.

Certification

  • Holding a current practicing certificate in a civil or common law jurisdiction

Experience

  • At least 8-10 years of experience in legal roles.
  • Experience in the Oil & Gas industry including upstream operations is an advantage
